Pattern Trial: Alaina Beanie

Today I want to share the pattern that made me fall in love with knitting hats. My first go-around with the Alaina Beanie by Jen Eastin was years ago. My progress was slow, it actually took three full days to finish, but it was a huge step up from the scarves and washcloths I had previously done.

Here's a picture from the original pattern:

Within a couple weeks, this became my go-to pattern. I made one in every color and material, and gave them to everyone in my family. Although I have now graduated onto more complex and varied patterns, I still go back to this one frequently. I can knit it without even glancing at the pattern, and there are always two or three of these bad boys in my Christmas hat box.

The only teeny-tiny changes I’ve made are swapping the 1x1 rib for 2x2 (which is just my personal preference, because I think it looks more neat and tidy), and tightening up the simple cables. Other than that, there is zero variation from the original. The two colors featured in the pictures are Yarn Bee Comfy Cozy Yarn in Mustard and Red Heart Fiesta Yarn in Country Blue. The yellow is undoubtedly softer, but the blue has so much personality.
